Built for the local ground
Large parts of Canberra sit on reactive clay that swells and shrinks with moisture. Footings and slabs are designed to the site's soil class under AS 2870, which is why a proper slab is not just a thicker pour.
Canberra runs cold, frosty winters and hot, dry summers. Both matter for concrete: pours in winter cure slowly and need protection from frost, and slabs on the region's reactive clay can lift with seasonal moisture. Summer pours need curing so the surface does not dry too fast and craze.
