Concrete Services in Aranda

Aranda backs onto the bushland at the foot of Black Mountain, and a lot of its blocks feel it — they slope, they sit over shallow rock in places, and many still carry the original driveways and paths from when the suburb was built in the late 1960s. Native gardens and big established trees are part of the appeal, but they also mean root heave and clay that dries unevenly beside them. We pour concrete in Aranda for driveway replacements, new paths and steps, carport and shed slabs, and patios on stepped yards, and we look at the slope, the rock and the trees on each block before we quote. If excavation is likely to hit rock, we tell you that up front and price it in, rather than discovering it on the day and sending you a variation.

  • Original driveway replacement — Tired 1960s–70s driveways that have cracked and heaved, removed and rebuilt on a sound base in plain, broom or exposed aggregate.
  • Paths & steps on slopes — Side paths, entry steps and landings formed to suit a falling block, with handrail set-downs and falls that keep water off the house.
  • Carport & shed slabs — Slabs for carports, garages and garden sheds on sloping ground, with edge thickening or footings where the levels call for them.

What's under Aranda

Ground conditions in Aranda

Once the concrete is poured, there's no going back to fix what's under it. That's why we look at the ground here before we price a single square metre.

Shallow rock on the bushland side

Blocks closer to Black Mountain can hit rock within a short dig, which may need a rock breaker for excavation and stepped footings where the slab changes level.

Reactive clay between the rock

Where the rock drops away the ground is usually reactive clay, so a single driveway can sit partly on rock and partly on clay. We detail joints and reinforcement for that change.

Established trees and roots

Mature street and garden trees lift old paths and driveways and dry the clay around them. We plan cut lines and root management, and check tree protection rules first.

Aranda concrete questions

Questions we hear a lot from Aranda homeowners before we come out to quote.

What happens if you hit rock under my Aranda driveway?

On the Black Mountain side of Aranda that is a real possibility, so we assess it before quoting rather than after. Where rock is likely we allow for a rock breaker or saw-cutting in the price and tell you which part of the job it affects. Rock is actually good bearing ground; the care goes into the transition where the slab moves from rock onto clay.

Can you replace a driveway near a large tree in Aranda?

Usually, yes, but it needs planning. Some large trees in the ACT are protected under the Tree Protection Act, and digging inside a tree protection zone may need TCCS approval. We check the tree, discuss whether roots can be bridged or worked around, and keep excavation as shallow as the design allows so the tree and the new slab both have a fair chance.

Do I need approval to rebuild the verge crossing as well?

If the work extends past your boundary into the verge, the crossing needs ACT Government approval through Transport Canberra and City Services and must be built to the ACT standard drawings. Many older Aranda crossings are due for replacement along with the driveway. We can help you work out what is needed and pour the private section to meet it neatly.
