Plain Concrete Canberra

Plain Concrete in Canberra is a reliable, cost-effective choice for driveways, paths, garages, sheds and slabs. A well-built plain concrete surface offers strength, durability and a clean, simple look that suits almost any home, business or workshop. It remains a popular choice because it is simple, strong and very affordable. Tell us the area and how it will be used, and we will recommend thickness, reinforcement, joints and finish. Canberra's frosts and reactive clay soils make preparation important, so a compacted base and careful curing help plain concrete across Belconnen, Tuggeranong and Fyshwick resist cracking for years. Simple and strong.

  • Most economical finish — The most affordable way to get a hard-wearing surface
  • Same base preparation — We dig, compact, reinforce and joint it exactly as we would a decorative slab
  • Brushed for traction — A broomed surface that gives tyres and shoes something to hold on frosty mornings and slopes
  • Trowel finish for interiors — A smooth steel-trowelled finish for sheds, garages and floors you’ll cover later
  • Can be upgraded later — A solid plain slab can take an overlay or be ground back down the track

What's included

Canberra Plain Concrete Services

No-fuss concrete that does its job well, poured with the same care as our decorative work.

01

Classic broomed driveways

Brushed across the slope for grip on frosty mornings, with reinforcement and joints set for the soil your block actually sits on.

02

Side and backyard paths

Bins out, washing in, bikes round the side — paths that keep your feet dry and run water away from the house.

03

Shed and garage slabs

A reinforced pad sized for what’s actually going on it, finished smooth and properly cured before your builder starts framing.

04

Smooth trowelled floors

Steel-trowelled interior slabs that look tidy left bare, or give tiles, timber or carpet a dead-flat base later on.

05

Edging and mower strips

Neat concrete edges that keep garden beds in their place, stop grass creeping in and make mowing the edges much quicker.

06

Fixing plain concrete

Cracked, sunken or worn concrete doesn’t always need replacing. We’ll repair what’s fixable and tell you straight when it isn’t.

How the job runs

Canberra Plain Concrete Process

Plain concrete goes through exactly the same four stages as our decorative work. Only the surface finish is simpler — none of the steps that make a slab last get cut just because it’s grey. We assess your ground, compact the base, place the steel, set the thickness, space the joints and cure the slab just as we would under a coloured or exposed finish. That’s the real value: your money goes into the structure, not the look. We put joints where the concrete would naturally want to crack and let it cure properly, which stops most of the shrinkage cracks people wrongly put down to a basic mix.

1

Site & Soil Assessment

Before we quote, we check access, slope, drainage and the ground itself, since estate fill, shallow rock and reactive clay each need their own base.

2

Base Prep & Formwork

We compact the base to the right standard and set the forms to the exact sizes and falls in your quote.

3

Reinforcement & Pour

Steel mesh or bar goes in where the design calls for it, then we pour and give it a broomed or trowelled surface on a day when the weather suits.

4

Cure & Handover

We leave barriers up while the slab cures, then take you around the finished job and answer any questions.

Why locals choose us

Why Choose Our Plain Concrete Experts in Canberra

The cheapest finish is where some concreters skimp on the base, and that’s exactly where it counts most.

Base prep not compromised

Compaction, depth and steel matched to your soil, exactly as we’d do on a decorative job. It’s what makes a slab last.

Jointed properly

Joints spaced to suit the slab and the soil beneath, so any cracking happens in the joint rather than across the middle.

Falls set correctly

Water runs away from your house and off the surface — the thing cheap plain concrete gets wrong most often.

Consistent broom finish

The broom goes the same way across every panel, so the texture stays the same from the gate to the garage.

Fixed-price quotes

Base, steel, pour and finish in one written price, with no allowances that blow out later.

7 year workmanship guarantee

Plain concrete gets the same seven-year workmanship guarantee as everything else we pour.

Before you call

Plain Concrete questions we get asked in Canberra

Quick answers to what Canberra homeowners usually ask us before getting a price.

Is plain concrete cheaper?

Yes, because you’re paying for the structure, not a fancy surface. Everything underneath is the same as a decorative slab: compacted base, steel, thickness, joint spacing and curing.

Will plain concrete crack?

Concrete shrinks as it cures, so we cut joints to control where cracks form. Laid and cured properly, any cracking stays in those joints. Most cracks blamed on plain concrete actually come from a base that was never properly compacted.

What finishes are available?

Broom finish is the go-to, giving slip resistance on driveways and paths. Steel trowelling leaves a smoother face that’s ideal in garages and sheds. Either way it’s the same plain concrete, just a different texture, not a different strength.

Does plain concrete need sealing?

You don’t have to, but sealing stops oil, tyre marks and leaf stains soaking in and makes cleaning easier. Over a frosty Canberra winter it also helps guard against freeze-thaw scaling.

Can I add a finish later?

Yes. A solid plain slab can later take a stain or overlay, or be ground to show stone, provided we ordered a mix with suitable aggregate. If that might be on the cards, tell us before the pour.
